Meet Lorelea Frizzell, a real-life superhero in the world of words. Lorelea has been a speech-language pathologist with the Department of Education for years, and her journey is nothing short of inspiring. Imagine starting right out of university in the early '90s, fresh-faced and eager to help kids communicate better. That's exactly where Lorelea's story begins. “It was a hard place to be a new grad (at that time). You have to rely on your experience along with your expertise to do a decent job, especially as we moved toward a consultative model.” Lorelea knew she needed to learn more. So, she packed her bags and left her hometown of Whitehorse to gather wisdom and experience from around the world. She worked in the Lower Mainland, then ventured far from home, even teaching English as a second language in Bamako, Mali. These adventures taught her not just about speech and language but about confidence and the power of diverse experiences. Years later, with a wealth of knowledge and a child of her own, Lorelea returned to Whitehorse. She found a Department of Education that had grown just as she had. Now, she's part of a team that's all about supporting students with their speech and language needs. Language involves more than just talking. It's about understanding what we hear or read and using words to share our thoughts with others. Lorelea's work is vital for kids who find these things tricky. She creates the overall care plans for kids who need an extra help with speech and language by consulting with parents/guardians and school staff. Today, Lorelea works mainly with the younger crowd across the Yukon, helping them find their voice. But she's not alone; she has a colleague who handles the high school scene, and together, they're on the lookout for more heroes to join their team. If you've ever dreamed of making a big difference in little lives and exploring the beautiful Yukon, here's your chance.
